The Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum — two of Amsterdam’s most iconic cultural institutions — both have unique pieces from the KOKKE House collection in their permanent exhibitions. That made it feel natural to create a concept that connects the suite to the city’s design legacy through our work.
Designing the KOKKE House suite at Hotel De L’Europe has been one of my favorite projects. It felt like being a child in a candy store, selecting from all the beautiful designs and artworks within our family.
Every item in the suite is designed by my father and me, crafted by the same craftsmen who’ve been working with our original designs since 1984. The paintings and sculptures by my mother, Petra Hartman bring the space together, as do the voyeuristic voiles designed by my sister, Fee Kokke.
Some of my favorite elements include the Pootjes! canopy bed — a new design based on my father’s iconic chair — the handblown lamps made with Royal Leerdam Crystal, and the timeless Klokkast cupboard from 1989.
It was hard to part with my favorite painting, Drunk Girl Sleeping on Toilet, but now others get to enjoy it while being “drunk on toilet” themselves.
Together, we created the KOKKE House I’ve always wanted people to experience — a complete environment made up of current pieces, archival designs, and custom works developed especially for this suite.
The collaboration with Hotel De L’Europe offers guests a rare opportunity: not just to see our design classics, but to live with them. It turns a museum-quality experience into something intimate, personal, and real.
